2011 Long Beach International City Bank Marathon Decorating Course with Art

LONG BEACH, CA – The “Art of Running” will be on display the Long Beach International City Bank Marathon and Half Marathon on Sunday, October 9. The event, recognized for its scenic course, is getting even better with the addition of a major display of art along the course.

The Marathon’s goal is to become a “26.2 Mile Art Experience,” and this year, two major initiatives are supporting this effort.

First, artwork created by young patients at Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach is being featured on all of the Marathon Mile Markers. The featured artwork on the Mile Markers was created and painted by hospitalized patients from Miller Children’s as part of the hospital’s ‘Artful Healing’ program which allows patients distraction and relaxation during an often overwhelming experience.

Race participants will be able to bid on taking home Mile Marker 1, 13 or 26.2 as a memory of their accomplishment through a silent auction held at the pre-race Health Expo on Friday, Oct 7 and Saturday, Oct. 8.  One hundred percent of the proceeds of the silent auction will benefit the Artful Healing program, directed by Miller Children’s artist in residence Denise Clayton-Leonard.

“Our young patient artists gain comfort and self-assurance while creating art. Featuring their artwork on the Marathon Mile Markers and having the Silent Auction gives them satisfaction for helping the Artful Healing program and Miller Children’s,” says Denise Clayton-Leonard, artist in residence, Artful Healing program, Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach. “They like feeling needed and have taken ownership of this project.  It’s elevated our patients to a more assertive level of empowerment than ever before.”

New this year, the event is also working with United Nations Association San Diego-based Art Miles Mural Project to display several hundred themed murals along the course.  The Art Miles project inventory includes thousands of diverse murals created by more than one half million people from over 125 countries. They have been recognized by the United Nations for their efforts to unite peoples of different cultural backgrounds and encourage dialogue and peace through art. Additionally, Marathon participants and associated groups are painting 26 new murals to contribute new murals to the Art Miles initiative.

According to Joanne Tawfilis, Co-Founder/Executive Director of this 15 year old international project, “Long Beach has been a big contributor to the Environmental and Children’s Mural Mile for several years “running” thanks to the great collaboration with the Aquarium of the Pacific.  We hope the Art Miles Murals created by the community and from around the world will add sparks of color and inspiration for participants as they run this amazing marathon for such a worthy cause”.

“Long Beach has a vibrant arts community and we hope to inspire the local artists and the entire Southern California arts community to eventually host a major art exhibit in association with the marathon.  We think it will make the marathon event unique and nationally distinct,” said John Parks, EVP Marketing for RUN Racing.

The Long Beach International City Bank Marathon takes place on Sunday, Oct. 9, with the start and finish along Shoreline Drive in downtown Long Beach. The event is composed of a 26.2-mile marathon, a 13-.1-mile half marathon, the Bubba Gump Run Forrest Run 5K and 26.2 Mile bike tour.  It also hosts the Aquarium of the Pacific Kids Run, free for 2,000 kids ages 6 – 12 years old the day prior to the marathon. It attracts around 25,000 total participants.

2011 event sponsors to date include: Title Sponsor – International City Bank; Corporate Sponsors, JetBlue Airways –  Official Airlines; Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach and Community Hospital Long Beach – Official Hospitals; the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company – 5K Sponsor; the Aquarium of the Pacific – Kids Run Sponsor; Waste Management – Official Green Team; Buono’s Pizzeria – Official Pizza; Cliff Bar – the Official Energy Bar and Energy Gel; Michelob Ultra – Finish Line Festival sponsor; and Long Beach Hyatt Hotel – Official Headquarters Hotel. The Long Beach International City Bank Marathon & Half Marathon Celebrates its 27th Year as Southern California’s Fun and Scenic Marathon

One of Southern California’s most fun – and certainly scenic – events takes place with the 27th running of the Long Beach International City Bank Marathon & Half Marathon, Sunday, Oct. 9.

Approximately 25,000 runners are expected to participate in the full marathon, half marathon, 26.2 Bike Tour and Bubba Gump Run Forrest Run 5K. The Aquarium of the Pacific Kids One-Mile Fun Run will take place on Saturday, Oct. 8, and is free for up to 2,000 children ages 6 to 12 years old.

To make the event nationally distinct, the marathon has developed a new art theme and is working to eventually make the Marathon a “26.2 Mile Art Experience.” For 2011, RUN Racing, the marathon organizer, has partnered with the San Diego based non-profit Art Miles to display hundreds of art murals along the course.

The Long Beach course is scenic and has great community support. It starts on Shoreline Drive, continues over the Queensway Bridge, by the Queen Mary, Ocean Blvd. by the Lighthouse, Aquarium, Rainbow Harbor, and down the beach. It includes historic residential neighborhoods, by 2nd Street in Belmont Shore, Marine Stadium, Colorado Lagoon, Blair Field, and through Cal State Long Beach where large groups of students cheer on the runners. The finish is on scenic Shoreline Drive, where everyone celebrates at the Beach Party Finish Line Festival.

All this combined is why the International City Bank Marathon and Half Marathon is known as one of the country’s most enjoyable endurance running events. In 2010 Yolanda Holder broke the world record for running an incredible 106 marathons in one year all over the U.S. When asked which one was most fun, “she said ‘Long Beach!,’ ” according to Joseph Taricani, Show Host for The Marathon Show, a national radio blog. “The Long Beach Marathon should be a destination race for every runner. It’s absolutely one of my top five favorite marathons in America.”

The marathon supports Youth Fitness and has joined forces with the non-profit Aquarium of the Pacific host a free Aquarium of the Pacific One-Mile Kids Fun Run on Saturday, October 8, 2010 from 9 am-noon. Up to 2,000 kids ages 6 to 12 run in the event at no cost. Those participating will each receive a commemorative Octopus Medal, finisher certificate, and free entry to the Aquarium. Kids will be timed and will run in waves with their own age group.

For those that can’t run a full or half marathon, Bubba Gump will host the fun “Run Forrest Run 5K” – in the spirit of “Forrest Gump” the movie. It’s held on Sunday, following the start of the the Marathon “Forrest Gump” himself will be on hand as runners and walkers enjoy a beautiful course around the Pike, Aquarium of the Pacific and Shoreline Village. Afterwards, participants will be treated to Bubba Gump food, activities, entertainment and prizes.

The event kicks off on Friday with the two-day Health & Fitness Expo at the Long Beach Convention Center, Hall C. The Expo features exhibitors and highlights the latest in the running, health and fitness industry. All athletes must attend the Expo to pick up their race packets, and the Expo is also the last place to register for any of the marathon events. It is open Friday, Oct. 7, from noon-7 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 8, from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. More than 50,000 people attend this expo, which is open and free to the public. There is no race-day registration or packet pickup.

During and after Sunday’s race, 50,000 people gather on Marina Green for the annual Beach Party Finish Line Festival, which goes from 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Friends and family will be cheering and celebrating as finishers achieve their lifetime goals.

Since 2005, the Long Beach International City Bank Marathon has helped charities fundraise over $3.5 million dollars for their good causes. This year, around 30 Official Charities will be conducting pledge drives and will benefit as a result of their relationship with the marathon.

FEMALE QUALIFIES FOR US OLYMPIC TIME TRIALS IN HER FIRST MARATHON, A HIGHLIGHT OF THE 27TH ANNUAL LONG BEACH INTERNATIONAL CITY BANK MARATHON

Running in her first marathon, Abigail Swift, 23, of Huntington Beach, qualified for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, finishing the 27th annual Long Beach International City Bank Marathon in 2:43:20 on a sunny day in Long Beach. The Olympic trials qualifying time is 2:45:00.

Swift, who was sixth overall and had only previously entered a half marathon, was not even trying to set a qualifying time. However, once the feat was accomplished, she said. “I’m excited, of course, but I really don’t know how to feel. It’s kind of crazy.” She has just moved to Southern California from Delaware.

She finished ahead of Lindsay Nelson, 26, of Roseville, CA, who posted a time of 2:57:52, and Whitney Tawney, 26, of Upland, who had a time of 2:59:19.

On the men’s side, 2010 third-place finisher Edwin Romero, 24, who came in from Bogota, Colombia, just to run this event, won with a time of 2:19:08. It would have been faster, he said, but his shoelaces came untied at the 22-mile mark. “I prepared five months for this race,” he said. “I’m very happy.”

Finishing second was Jose Morales, 24, of Turlock, CA, with a time of 2:24:46. LIke Swift, it was his first marathon. As he sat sipping a Michelob Ultra in the VIP tent afterward, he said, “I tried to catch Edwin but the hills at Long Beach State kind of got to me. Still, it’s a beautiful day, a beautiful course, and I can’t complain.”

Matt Bejar, 24, of San Jose, was third in the men’s division with a time of 2:38:12.

The Long Beach International City Bank Marathon and Half Marathon boasted a field of 25,000 competitors, running a scenic course through Long Beach that included the Queen Mary, Shoreline Village, Belmont Shore, Long Beach State and Shoreline Drive.

The US Olympic Marathon Team Trials are scheduled for Jan. 14 in Houston.
