To kick off the series of Peninsula-wide Wild Mushroom events, the Painted Lady Lavendar Farm, along historic highway 101 in Ilwaco, will present “The Fungus Among Us” on October 3 from 3 to 5 pm. This is a great opportunity for mushroom enthusiasts to get their hands dirty and learn the ins and outs of of foraging, identifying, and collecting the edible mushroom varieties on the Long Beach Peninsula with tips on preservation.
The Columbia Pacific Farmers’ Market, located at Veteran’s Field in downtown Long Beach, will feature their 3rd Annual Fungus Festival, complete with famed local forager, Veronica Williams, owner of All Wild. She will discuss the do’s and don’ts of foraging and wild mushroom identification. Locally foraged, wild mushrooms will be available for purchase at the Market.
After learning how to collect your bounty, head to The Depot Restaurant for Chef Michael Lalewicz’s 11th Annual Wild Mushroom Dinner. Delight your palate with roasted lobster mushrooms, white truffle oil scented porcini risotto, chanterelle mushroom cream, and truffle honey whipped cream as they are featured in this Mediterranean-inspired, four-course meal. Reservations are required.
Boreas Bed & Breakfast Inn, in Long Beach, will present Boreas’ Wild Mushroom Celebration Special the weekend of October 17. The package features a delightful five-course Wild Mushroom and Wine Pairing Dinner on Saturday evening. The package includes two nights stay at the Inn, breakfast, and a six-course Wild Mushroom Sunday Brunch that will feature forager, Veronica Williams. Boreas guests will also have a rare opportunity to join Veronica on a private foraging excursion for an additional cost. If you can’t make it for the weekend, Boreas will continue to feature wild mushrooms frequently throughout the Celebration during their gourmet breakfast service for guests staying at the Inn.
The weekend of October 17 will also feature 42nd Street Café & Bistro offering a Wild Mushroom Dinner package in addition to wild mushroom scrambles for breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
The Shelburne Restaurant & Pub will host their 5th Annual Wild Mushroom and Pike Brewing Co. Dinner. Pike Brewing beers will be specially paired by Shelburne chefs with the best bounty of the season. Reservations are required to attend this dinner that will also feature guest hosts, Charles and Rose Ann Finkel, of Pike Brewing. On October 25, the Shelburne will host the author of, Wild Mushrooms, Cynthia Nims, who will conduct a cooking class in their instructional kitchen.
Pickled Fish and Lost Roo will be featuring wild mushrooms in daily specials throughout October and November. Mushroom enthusiasts interested in heading out into the wild and foraging for their own bounty should pick up a pocket guide to mushrooming, readily available at Time Enough Books at the Port of Ilwaco and Adelaide’s Coffee & Books in Ocean Park. Both will be selling the classic guide to Western mushrooms – All That the Rain Promises and More – by American mycologist and naturalist David Arora, as well as other helpful guides.
