clarkstreediscwalkIlwaco’s Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum will host their annual Lewis and Clark ‘Ocian in View’ Cultural Weekend on November 8 and 9, 2013.  This event will incorporate the wealth of historical sites and markers provided by the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum, Knappton Cove Heritage Center, Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center and of course, the beautiful Columbia River and the mighty Pacific Ocean.

There will be a lecture given by keynote speaker, Scott Tucker, of the Lewis & Clark National Historical Park. The free lecture entitled “Lewis and Clark, Beyond the Bicentennial: Looking for the next generation of storyteller” and is at 6PM on Friday November 8 at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum.

The weekend also boasts the famous Lewis & Clark Wild Game Dinner, available at the Depot Restaurant in historic Seaview on November 8. Chef Michael Lalewicz uses the Lewis & Clark journals to design the evenings’ offerings of game and locally foraged foods. The five-course dinner will showcase duck, elk and venison.  Reservations are required for this cultural delight!

stationcampMIDVILTake a scenic ride on the Historic Sites Interpretive Bus Tour with historian Jim Sayce, Washington State Historical Society’s Lewis and Clark Liason, and Scott Tucker, as they retrace the footsteps of Lewis and Clark along the Washington coast while taking in breathtaking views of the Lower Columbia River on Saturday, November 9. The itinerary includes many touring stops that were referred to in the journals from the Corps of Discovery and experiencing the living history that has been preserved and maintained throughout various locations. Be sure to catch the Knappton Cove Heritage Center’s presentation ‘O! How Horrible is the Day’ from 11AM to 3PM on Saturday, November 9. This open house features Pacific Northwest Living History interpreters, museum exhibits including a century-old, quarantine hospital, river walks, and cider sipping.

Later that evening the Chinook Tribe will host their annual Chinook Tribe Salmon Dinner from 4-7PM at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum. The meal includes regional seafood, salad, Indian fry bread, dessert, and beverages. No reservations are required and the cost is $15 per person, seniors (55 and over) $13, children under 12 $5.

Be your own guide! Nearly all of the Lewis and Clark points of interest mentioned here are available for year-round exploration. Be sure to stop by the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center as it is a must-see destination for all things Lewis & Clark.

Columbia Pacific Farmers Market is celebrating another successful season with a Harvest Festival Celebration! Head down to the market this Friday,  from 4-7 p.m. at Veteran’s Field in downtown Long Beach. Harvest Festival will be in full swing, complete with wagon rides, chicken poop bingo, a pie eating contest, butter making, an apple cider press demonstration, sack races, and so much more! Check out some amazing vintage photographs at the Charles Fitzpatrick Pen & Photo show at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco. Charles Fitzpatrick (1884-1971) was a local who chronicled over 40 years of visual history on the Long Beach Peninsula. You will see many postcards, photographs, and drawings representing the working artist who found inspiration in local subjects like razor clam digging, salmon fishing, and many of the everyday scenes of the historic Peninsula. Come and Clam, Stay and Play!

clam4lifeA great experience for all ages – grab your clam gun and hit the beach to dig some delicious Razor Clams!

The 2013-2014 Razor Clam Season kicks off this weekend on Peninsula Beaches. Take advantage of the four day dig and stay the weekend on Washington’s beautiful Long Beach Peninsula. With 28 miles of white sand beaches stretching along the peninsula, there is plenty of beach for everyone to dig their 15 clam limit! Digging is open from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter PointStop by the Visitors Bureau for a free tide book. 

Where can I purchase a Razor Clam License?

On your way into town, check out the Seaview Shell Station for a hot cup of coffee and a Shellfish License!

Dennis Company in Long Beach, is your one-stop-shop for all things clamming  You can find everything you need from boots, shovels, clam guns, and nets, to warm clothing, lanterns, and Shellfish Licenses!

After digging your limit head over to Veteran’s Field for Fungus Festival at the Columbia-Pacific Farmers’ Market in downtown Long Beach from 4-7 PM. Local forager, Veronica Williams, of All Wild, will be giving a presentation at 4:30 pm. She will share information on the different kinds of mushrooms, how to forage and the do’s and don’ts of foraging. Mushrooms and other foraged items will be available for purchase in addition to the usual market offerings.

Between your weekend digs you can stop by the Long Beach Grange Indoor Market this Friday and Saturday from 10AM to 4PM.This market features a variety of products including farm-fresh eggs, home-baked goods, handcrafted items, goat milk products, and gifts. You never know what you will find at the market!
