Get Ready for the 33rd Annual Washington State International Kite Festival

Let out a little more string on your kite! 

The Washington State International Kite Festival is a week-long kite celebration and competition held annually during the third full week of August. Starting on Monday and ending on Sunday, this beautiful festival boasts skies ablaze with color, high flying action and choreographed movement.

Washington’s Kite Festival draws famous kite fliers from all around the world, and tens of thousands awed spectators, many of whom participate in the fun with their own kite flying adventures.

This week not only features kites, but also attracts many vendors offering interesting and tasty treats and treasures. Friday night features lighted kites and a beautiful display of fireworks.

***World Record Attempt***

IQuad and 25 years of Revolution!

This year’s festival will host Revolution quad line fliers from all over North America, Asia and Europe who are coming to demonstrate coordinated quad line team flying and attempt a new World Record of ONE HUNDRED kites and pilots (the existing record of 64 was set at WSIKF 2010)… Flying these unique kites, pilots are able to fly forward, reverse, spin and even hover in mid-air like a helicopter, giving unparalleled control that is perfect for synchronized team flying. Rev fliers will be active throughout the whole week of WSIKF but weather allowing, the actual record attempts are tentatively scheduled across three days (see below for schedule). Feel free to watch, ask questions and even get a free kite lesson on the dedicated Revolution learn to fly field! This years Rev mega fly attempts will be led by Team iQuad and other experienced team leaders from all around the world.

Here is this week’s lineup of events:

Monday – Kite Trains – Arches – Multi-Line Stacks, & Fighter Kites. Watch the kite trains disappear into the clouds!

Tuesday – Terrific Territories, Totally Tubular, Individual and Team Rokkaku Battles. Experience the thrill of kites battling to knock each other out of the sky!

Wednesday – Paint me Patriotic, today is Children’s and Senior’s Day! Enjoy the plethora of activities and camps for kids and get out on the flying field and celebrate the 10th Annual Foster Grandparent Fun Fly!

Thursday – Handcrafted Comprehensive Competition, Mega Red, White, and Blue Fly! Following tradition, a tribute fly is held annually to recognize the contributions of kite makers that have had an impact in the Northwest. Join in on the Rob Pratt Tribute Fly! World Record Attempt TODAY!

Friday – Sport Kite Events, Mass Ascensions #1 – Deltas & Derivatives, Junior Dual Control Competition, Mass Ascension #2 – Cellular Kites, Mystery Ballet, Lighted Kite Night Fly, and FIREWORKS!!! The fireworks will start shortly after the Lighted Kite Night Fly, around 9:45PM. Enjoy the beautiful display as the fireworks light up the night sky! World Record Attempt TODAY!

Saturday – Sport Kite Events, Cody Kite Fly, Teddy Bear Drop, Parade of Colors,  Rokkaku Challenge, Children’s Kite Making, and Mass Ascension #3 of Flat and Bowed Kites. World Record Attempt TODAY!

Sunday -Sport Kite Events, Memorial Fly, Mass Ascension #4 – Sparless Soft Kites, Hot Tricks. The Memorial Fly is an event open to all – fly your kite in remembrance of those lost in the past year.

Among all the kites, colors, and great people, delight your palate with delicious fair-style foods, and have fun walking along the vendors that line the Bolstad Beach Approach.

Be sure to visit the special Ray Bethell exhibit and explore the beautiful world of kiting at the ever popular World Kite Museum!

We’ve Got the Blues, Jazz, Seafood & Oysters too!

Make a weekend out of it! Start off with Blues and Seafood at the Port of Ilwaco and then head north for Jazz & Oysters in Ocean Park

Blues and Seafood

Ilwaco’s Blues and Seafood event is sure to please with an exciting lineup of Blues artists! This year’s event features headliner, Coco Montoya, one of the world’s greatest blues artists. This is a show you just can’t miss! The Robin Gibson Band will open up the festival on Friday night followed by the North Coast Blues Band and the famous All Star Jam with the Heartbreakers, featuring a terrific line up of the Northwest’s premier female blues singers. Friday’s lineup starts at 7PM and ends at 10PM.

Saturday night kicks off with Muddy Award Hall of Famer, Kevin Selfe & the Tornadoes.  They’ll be followed by The Strange Tones, who will be bringing the Volcano Vixens along to help blow the roof off. The original NW Boogie Cat, Norman Sylvester, is back by popular demand and promises to have everyone up and on their feet, dancing the night away! Saturday wraps up with this year’s headliner, one of the world’s greatest blues artist,  Coco Montoya. Saturday starts at 2PM and ends at 10 PM.

Delight your palate with local seafood, regional microbrews and wines, and barbecued oysters fresh from our very own Willapa Bay. Head down to the Port of Ilwaco, August 16 & 17, 2013 and enjoy two days of live Blues! Tickets may be purchased online, at the Long Beach Peninsula Visitors Bureau, or at the event. Tickets are $15 for Friday night and $25 for all day Saturday. Two-day tickets for Friday & Saturday are $35. Blues and Seafood is partnering with Jazz & Oysters to offer a special combination ticket. See below for details.

Jazz & Oysters

What pairs well with Blues and Seafood? Jazz & Oysters of course! This year’s lineup includes Patrick Lamb, a talented performer whose energy and charm will captivate any audience. Acústica will also grace the stage. They are a unique musical group on the Pacific Northwest Coast offering a magnetic fusion of intercultural and linguistic musical experience. The annual event rounds up a great weekend of live music, seafood and culture on the Peninsula! Bring your lawn chair or blanket, some sunscreen and join other jazz fans for a day of great music and fabulous food complete with local oysters, desserts, drinks, and an array of sausages and other tasty tidbits. The festivities are from 12-5PM at Wilson Field in Ocean Park, August 18, 2013. Tickets are available at the event for $20 for adults, $10 for children ages 10-18, children under age 6 are free. Active Duty Military and their dependents get in free.

Enjoy all that Blues and Seafood and Jazz & Oysters have to offer! Come and enjoy a great weekend of music, food, and fun on the Long Beach Peninsula. You can purchase tickets for each event separately OR you may purchase a combination ticket for  a full weekend package that includes Friday and Saturday at Blues and Seafood in Ilwaco and Sunday at Jazz & Oysters in Ocean Park for only $50.

Peninsula Clay Artists 5th Annual Show & Sale

Mud & Fire is this year’s theme for the Annual Peninsula Clay Artists Show & Sale. Be sure to stop by and view the beautiful works created by local Peninsula Clay Artists at the Artisan (114 Main S.W.) in Ilwaco August 7-17. Take one of their great classes and learn how to create beautiful pieces of art from the masters! There will be 15 separate workshops in the studio and kiln yard. The show will be open 10AM-5PM daily and will be open from 10AM-8PM during its opening reception on Wednesday, August 7 and on Thursday August 15 during Ilwaco Art Night. You will be entertained during the opening reception by the musical talents of Brian O’Connor. Admission is free and you will have the opportunity to see brilliant works by local artists such as Rod Maxwell-Muir, David Campiche, Renee O’Connor, Jan Richardson and many more.



Waikiki Beach Concert Series

Don’t miss the chance to experience LIVE music on the shore of Waikiki Beach at Cape Disappointment State Park before the season is over! The annual concert series is wrapping up its run at the Confluence Project Amphitheater. This summer has featured many talents ranging from Americana, blues, rock, R&B, folk, bluegrass, country and world music. All performances begin at 7PM. Concerts are free but a Discovery Pass is required for your vehicle. Remaining performances are scheduled as follows:

Aug. 10 – Sugarcane (bluegrass, blues, funk, Caribbean)
Aug. 24 – The Ben Rice Band (rockabilly, swamp rock, country)



Beach Belly Dance Festival – Dragon’s Fire 2013

Behold the magic of Belly Dancing! The Painted Lady Lavender Farm in Ilwaco presents the 2nd Annual Beach Belly Dancing Festival. Check out all of the vendors, experience the beautiful art and culture, engage your spirit at the workshops, and let your inner self shine! The festival runs August 10-11 at the Painted Lady Lavender Farm at 1664 Highway 101 in Ilwaco.



Jr. Surf N’ Saddle Rodeo

The Northwest Junior Rodeo Association Surf N’ Saddle Rodeo kicks off on Friday, August 9 with a horse Parade through downtown Long Beach at 6:30PM that loops back to the rodeo grounds. Each morning the day will begin with a hearty Cowboy Breakfast from 7AM-11AM with the Rodeo starting at 10AM. Admission is FREE. The Jr. Rodeo runs August 10-11.



Edible Garden Tour

Come out and explore select local edible gardens throughout the Peninsula and learn the tricks of the trade of how to keep up and produce your own edible garden in our unique climate! Admission to the tour is $7 or 5 cans of food, which will all be donated to local food banks (Children under 16 are free, but must be accompanied by an adult). Tickets are available at Adelaide’s, Jimella & Nanci’s Seafood Market, The Planter Box Nursery, and at the English Garden Nursery. Maps will be provided. The Tour is on Sunday, August 11, and the gardens are open from noon to 5PM.



Ilwaco Art Night

Stroll along the waterfront and view different local galleries as artisans let you take a peek into their studios and keep their galleries open extra late for a night of art, refreshments and fun. Join us from 6-8PM on Thursday, August 15 for Art Night in Ilwaco!

Happy Birthday, Jake!

Jake the Alligator Man’s Birthday

We’re celebrating Jake’s 75th Birthday… AGAIN!  And he’s choosing a bride… AGAIN! The 7th Annual Jake the Alligator Man Celebration kicks off with his annual Bachelor Party and Burlesque show Friday, August 2. Doors open at 6PM at the Elks in downtown Long Beach. This is a show for the 21 and older crowd. There is a $10 cover and dinner and drinks will be available for purchase. The theme for the Bachelor Party Burlesque show is Blue Hawaii. Expect to have a great time and enjoy the live music and entertainment from the Graceland Five, the Infamous Nina Nightshade and many more. The show will be hosted by the legendary burlesque emcee, Vincent Drambuie. One-of-a-kind event tee shirts, designed by Vintage Roadside, will be available along with other Jake swag. Dressing with the theme Blue Hawaii is overly encouraged. There will be a special prize for the audience member who takes the Elvis Blue Hawaii theme to the extreme!

Enjoy Jake’s Birthday Celebration on Saturday August 3. All ages are invited to celebrate Jake with the annual Car Show kicking off the days festivities at 11AM in downtown Long Beach. There will be a bounce house for the little ones to enjoy available at Veterans Field .

This turn of the century sideshow oddity has developed a cult following over the years among many generations of visitors. Have you seen Jake? Race Against Violence

Here is another great opportunity for you to hit the sand running! Enjoy a brisk 5k walk or run on our beautiful hard packed, white sand beaches for the annual The Domestic Violence Awareness Project of Pacific County’s Race Against Violence. Join us for the race on Saturday, August 3.  The start time is 10AM at the Bolstad Beach Approach in Long Beach. Runners will have a chance to win one of four trophies for both male and female finishers. Come out and enjoy the fun and support a great cause!


Free Admission to ALL Washington State Parks

Get outside and enjoy our local State Parks! Visit Washington state parks for FREE August 4, 2013. The Discover Pass is not required to visit WA State Parks on free days. Take advantage of this limited time opportunity and have some fun in the great outdoors!
